Maharaja Hari Singh

The 57th death anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, is being celebrating. Maharaja Hari Singh was born on 23 September 1895 in Jammu, and died on 26 April 1961 in Maharashtra at the age of 65. Maharaja Hari Singh's father's name was Amar Singh and mother's name was Bhotiyali Chhib. After the death of his uncle, Hari Singh became the new Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir on 23 September 1923. After Indian independence in 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh got the support of Indian soldiers to save his kingdom from the invasion of Pakistani army.

Accepting the long pending demand of the people in the Jammu region, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has decided to declare 23 September, the birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, as a public holiday. Maharaja Hari Singh was a great educationist, progressive thinker and social reformer. The public holiday would be a fitting tribute to his rich legacy.
